Leadership of The Department

With the diverse capacity groomed and housed in the Department, it has been blessed with quality and visionary leadership. Since inception, the Department has been steered by Prof. Abdulmumini Adebayo Oba (1997-2002); Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN (2003-2009); Prof. Jamiu Adedoyin Raji (2010-2012); Prof. Muhtar Etudaiye (2012-2014) and Prof. (Mrs) N.M Abdulraheem (2014-2018); Prof. Kayode Olatoke, SAN (2018-2020); Prof. L.A Ayinla (2020-2022); and currently Dr. A.C Onuora-Oguno (2022-till date). The Department has 10 academic staff with all of them holding doctoral degrees and 3 non-academic staff.

Prof Wahab Egbewole SAN attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, the Nigerian Law School and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1985. From 1985 to 1995, Prof Egbewole accumulated legal practice experience from government and private firms, and in 1995, he started his own law firm, Wahab Egbewole & Co. As an active legal practitioner, Prof Egbewole has continued to practice law and has contributed immensely to the development of Nigerian jurisprudence in several areas, particularly in electoral jurisprudence, constitutionalism, human rights, criminal practices, general civil practices, among others.

Driven by the urge to contribute to legal education, the erudite Professor joined the services of the University of Ilorin in 1997 as a Lecturer II. Not long after joining the University, his vibrant industriousness and scholarship soon came to the fore, and he has used these attributes to benefit legal education and research. Prof Egbewole’s administrative savvy has seen him serve the Law Faculty in numerous capacities including Acting Head of Department, Sub-Dean, Acting Dean of Law, among others. He has also served the university in different roles, notable among which are his role as the Director, General Studies Division, his membership of the University Senate and the University Governing Council. The erudite scholar was appointed a Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law in 2012 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to research and university administration and in 2022 appointed the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Prof Egbewole SAN is a member of many respected professional organisations, both nationally and internationally, including but not limited to the Nigerian Bar Association, the American Society of International Law, the African Bar Association, the International Bar Association, African Consortium on Law and Religion Studies, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and a Fellow of the Nigerian Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Society for Peace Studies and Practice.

Prof. Joshua Oluwakayode Olatoke

FCArb, SAN

Prof. Olatoke had is LLB from the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University LLB and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 12th December 1989. He bagged his Masters of Law (LLM) degree in the year 1995 from the same Obafemi Awolowo University and his Masters of Philosophy in Laws (M.Phil.) in the year 2004. He also had his Ph.D. in law from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife in 2007. He has a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the Nigerian Teachers Institute (NTI) in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

He rose to the peak of the profession when he was called to the Inner Bar in 2014, thus becoming a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Also in 2015, he became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration (FCI Arb) Nigeria.

He was a lecturer at the Department of Legal Studies, Kwara State Polytechnic from 1990 to 1998 before he crossed to the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, University of Ilorin, Ilorin from 1998 where he is till date. He was the immediate past Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law. He is a Professor of Law.

He has worked in the law firm of Tejumola Adeyemi & Co., Ilorin where he worked between 1990 and 1994 before he proceeded to establish his own law firm, Kayode Olatoke & Co, Ilorin where he has been the Principal Partner till date. He is the Non-Executive Vice Chairman of Tuyil Pharmaceuticals Industries (Nigeria) Ltd, the largest pharmaceutical company in Sub-Saharan Africa and is the legal retainer to several Institutions, companies and some government parastatals.

His legal capabilities have transcended the borders of Kwara State and it was not surprising when he was announced as Special Assistant on Litigation to two Attorneys General of the Federation and the Ministers of Justice in 2010 (Prince Tokunbo Kayode, SAN and Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN). Within the last ten years, the learned silk has handled many important cases at Supreme Court to the extent that all were reported in our law reports.

He has attended many training programmes, conferences, fora and workshops within and outside Nigeria particularly in the United States of America, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Australia, Austria, Portugal, France, Lebanon and the United Kingdom among many others. He has written many articles that have been published both in international and local journals.

Prof. L.A Ayinla

LL.B., BL., LL.M, Ph.D

Prof. Dr. L. A. Ayinla (Lukman Alabi Ayinla), was born over four decades, is a Professor and former Acting Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law (2020-2022), Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. He is an ADR expert and specializes in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), African Law / Customary Law and Jurisprudence & International Law, as well as Clinical Legal Education (he is the current Lead Coordinator of the University of Ilorin Legal Aid Clinic of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin). He teaches Legal Methods, Conflict of Laws and Research Methodology at undergraduate levels and teaches ADR and International Commercial Arbitration at postgraduate level. He attended Trinity Nursery & Primary School Ilorin for his primary education, Government Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State and Baboko Community Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria for his Secondary education. He did his undergraduate programme at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria where he obtained (LL.B. Combined Hons., Second Class Upper) in 1999 and attended the Nigerian Law School, Abuja-Nigeria where he obtained his (BL.) in the year 2000 and was called to the Nigerian Bar. He as well attended Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State Nigeria for his Master of Laws (LL.M). He obtained his Ph.D. in Law from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2011.

He is a Member of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers from 2002 to date, Member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (University of Ilorin Branch) 2002 to date. He is also a Member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National from 2001 to date and Member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ilorin Branch from 2001 to date.

He is the Project Coordinator, Expanding Access to Justice for Pre-Trial Prison Detainees in Nigeria, (OSIWA / NULAI and Unilorin Legal Aid Clinic), Implemented by Network of Universities Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) and University of Ilorin Legal Aid Clinic, January – December 2018.

The Convener & Advocate, Freedom of Information (UNDEF, FOI Unilorin Legal Aid Clinic Advocacy Campaign to Target Communities in Ilorin), on Building the Capacity of Community-Based Groups for the Effective Use of Freedom of Information Act in Nigeria. Sponsored by United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), Implemented by Network of Universities Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) and University of Ilorin Legal Aid Clinic, March 2014- February 2016. Also participated in the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) Research Grant for Disability Law Advocacy Project (DLAP), Implemented by the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin DLAP & Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), 2020. He served on the committee constituted by the University of Ilorin on Utility Management in 2022 to determine the adequacy, shortfall, challenges and recommend effective measures for overcoming the challenges and ensure sustainable provision of utility in the university. He has served as Faculty of Law Representative at the Faculty of Art and Faculty of Management Sciences. He is a Member of Faculty of Law Postgraduate Quality Control Committee from 2019 to date, Member, Postgraduate Admission Qualifying Interview Exercise of Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. Member, Postgraduate Admission Screening / Interview Exercise of Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. He is the present Coordinator of the University of Ilorin Legal Aid Clinic.
He has supervised 18 Master and 2 Ph.D. students to completion and supervising over 5 Ph.D. students and has published over 40 articles in both national and international scholarly journals.
